The Story Behind "Country Hugs"
By Frank | Country Hugs Music LLC
You know the hug where somebody reaches out just far enough to make contact. One pat on the shoulder. Done. They're already looking past you.
Technically a hug. Barely a hello.
Then there's the other kind. Arms open, no hesitation. Squeeze. They mean it. When they let go, you feel better than you did a minute ago.
Most people land somewhere in between. My friend Sandy landed on the big-hug end of that scale.
I knew her for about a year. Not long. But from the first time I met her, she hugged you like she'd been waiting all week to see you. Did it with everyone in our group. Every time. No exceptions.
Then she was gone. No warning. The kind of loss that doesn't make sense.
At her celebration of life, a friend in our group stood up to speak. He told about the first time he met Sandy. He'd done what most people do—reached out for the safe version. Side hug. Pat on the back. Polite distance.
Sandy stopped him cold.
"Oh no, no. No side hugs. No pat on the back. Come on—full front hug, big guy. Don't be shy."
Every person there was nodding. Sandy had pulled every one of them in for the hug the same way.
Sandy is the reason I wrote the song. I got the chance to tell her that.
Not because everyone should hug exactly the way she did.
Some people didn't grow up in hugging families. Some show they care in different ways. A handshake. A helping hand. A phone call. Just showing up when someone needs them.
Those things matter too.
What Sandy taught me was something bigger than a hug. She taught me to close the distance between people. To let them know they matter.
For her, that was a hug.
For someone else, it might be a smile, a conversation, or simply being there.
That's what "Country Hugs" is really about.
